River City Wrestling #131
Winnipeg Convention Center, Winnipeg, MB

Announcers Ron Strong & Mike Stone welcome us to another edition of River City Wrestling.

Opening Bout:

J.D. Miller v Anton Rojack (/w Valkrye)

Miller gives away about 5 inches and 60 pounds to Rojack, plus one scary looking valet at ringside. Despite this Rojack looks like a klutz who can’t wrestle his way out of a wet paper bag. Miller nails him with flying dropkicks, counters a simple headlock with a shove into the ropes and a drop toe hold, and dizzies him with three straight monkey flips. Miller walks Rojack over to the corner but is distracted by Valkrye who is up on the apron. Rojack nails Miller from behind, rolls him up, but only gets a 2 count. He sets up Miller for a piledriver but its countered with a back bodydrop. Miller nails a pair of legdrops, and when Valkrye jumps on the apron again, the diminutive cowboy from the Alberta-Saskatchewan bordertown of Lloydminster “accidently” backs into her face with a high elbow. He then walks Rojack into the corner, climbs the 2nd turnbuckle and comes off using his leg to drive Rojack into the mat to get the win.

J.D. Miller defeated Anton Rojack by pinfall after a 2nd rope face slam at 6:09

Post-Match:

Rojack looks dejected and embarrassed. Valkrye comes into the ring to give him a lecture but instead attacks Miller as he is leaving the ring. She lifts the 2nd rope up, crotching Miller. She pulls him back into the ring with a full-nelson which after a few seconds she turns into a slam. Valkrye leaves for the back being meekly followed by Rojack.

In-ring Interview:
Marty Goldstein is in the ring being interviewed by Ron Strong.
Goldstein is a little embarrassed, humbled, and yes, proud that he was named as one of the 3 finalists for the inaugural induction into the RCW Hall of Fame. He assures everyone that not only did he not vote for himself, or ask anyone to vote for him, he also had no idea he was being considered. He says he is not deserving of the honor, and besides if he was to pursue it then he would have to step down from the Hall of Fame selection committee as it would be a conflict of interest. Therefore, he has told the HoF committee head Matt Brock to remove him from further consideration, which Brock has agreed to do. Therfore, the HoF is down to two choices, both 3 time RCW Champions The Destroyer and Chris Lyon. Goldstein adds, may the best man win. Strong tries to get Goldstein to say which way he is voting but he won’t budge.

“Babe, it’s been a long time since we’ve been apart…”
“No One Like You” by the Scorpions
plays and the fans boo as Tawney England comes down to the ring with her man Chris Lyon.
Lyon accuses Goldstein of withdrawing so that he can force the other committee members to vote for Destroyer. Goldstein says Lyon obviously has never met Bulldog Bob Brown then, cause he’ll vote for whomever he so pleases. Lyon doesn’t give up though and tells Goldstein to resign from the committee or he’ll be sorry. This upsets Goldstein and the two get into a shouting match. But it’s England who steps forward and slaps Goldstein across the face.
Even Chris Lyon seems to realize this was a mistake and pulls England off of the RCW matchmaker.
Recovering Goldstein shakes it off and then takes the mic from Strong. He says he has two matches to make. First, later tonight Lyon’s Triumvirate cohort Bobby Duncum will take on The Destroyer. Yes, the RCW TV belt will be on the line but it will also be a #1 contenders match with the winner getting a shot at Chris Lyon’s RCW Heavyweight title next week. Also next week, Tawney England will return to the ring and face Valkrye! England protests that she is a manager now, not a wrestler, but Goldstein counters that manager’s are required to keep their hands to themselves. Unless she wrestles next week her manager’s license will be revoked.

Bout #2:

Brad Rheinghans v Dynamite Kid

This is a return bout with Rheinghans having won an upset in their previous encounter and a furious DK attacking him after the bell. This time out DK tries to get the jump and attack Rheinghans before the bell but the former Olympian anticipates it and gets in the first shot. Rheinghans controls the first two minutes of a very up tempo match. He goes for the Olympic suplex finisher but DK blocks it. The Brit goes to work with fists, chops, and then works over a leg. He takes the action outside where he still works over the leg. Back inside he tries to finish the match with an Indian death lock but can’t get the submission. He reapplies the hold but this time he cradles backwards for extra leverage. Again though Rheinghans manages to upset his balance and get out of the hold. DK nails a German suplex, a diving headbutt, and then scoops up his foe for what looks to be a hanging vertical suplex. However, instead he brings him straight down crashing him head first into the mat. The Winnipeg crowd is stunned having never seen this piledriver like suplex before. DK covers Rheinghans nonchalantly and gets the pin.

Dynamite Kid defeats Brad Rheinghans by pinfall with a “brainbuster” at 6:32

Post-Match:

Rheinghans isn’t moving and they call for paramedics. The paramedics arrive with a stretcher but seem reluctant to move him. Jim Brunzell comes out in street clothes to watch his friend as the paramedics immobilize his neck before placing him on the stretcher. Other then the “injured player” ovation given when Rheinghans is removed the Convention Center is hushed with concern.

Bout #3:

#1 Contenders Match for the RCW Heavyweight Title

The Destroyer (champion) v Bobby Duncum (/w Corrie England)

Destroyer controls early by grounding the bigger Duncum applying the dreaded side headlock, as well as utilizing body scissors. Duncum though still seems fresh when he turns the tables after about 4 minutes of this abuse. He catches Destroyer by the throat and tosses him into the corner, following in with a big elbow to the head. He tosses Destroyer out of the corner and then nails him in the face with a big boot. He continues to punish the masked legend with power moves but can’t get the pin. Destroyer tries to make a comeback but when he tries to whip Duncum to the ropes the big Texan reverses it, sending the champ right into the referee Kenny Jay who is knocked out. Duncum locks Destroyer in a full nelson and calls for Corrie England to enter the ring, which she does, carrying a steel chair. The set up is there for the chair shot but Destroyer is still fidgeting and England hesitates. She tells Duncum to hold him still while Duncum barks at her to just hit him already. Finally she waits too long and when she does swing Destroyer is able to duck. The chair smashes Duncum, and Destroyer menaces England out of the ring. Kenny Jay wakes up in time to make the count.

The Destroyer defeats Bobby Duncum by pinfall after botched outside interference at 7:54
[The Destroyer retains the RCW Television Title]

Bobby Duncum is furious with Corrie England and the two shout at each other all the way up the aisle. They are met at the top of the aisle by Chris Lyon and Tawney England. All four seem to be arguing and Corrie pushes Duncum, who pushes her back, which leads Tawney to slug Duncum. At this time Angelo Mosca arrives on the scene and between him and Lyon they manage to break things up. In the meantime the Destroyer had stopped his celebration to watch this unravel.

Announcers Ron Strong & Mike Stone welcome us to another edition of River City Wrestling.

Opening Bout:

Tawney England (/w Corrie England) v Valkrye (/w Anton Rojack)

This match was set up last week by Marty Goldstein as punishment for Tawney slapping him across the face. Tawney surprised folks though by going right after the muscular Valkrye, attacking her before the bell. She punished the newcomer for about 30 seconds before receiving a scoop slam for her troubles. As soon as it became apparent the direction this match was going Corrie tried to enter the ring, but Rojack pulled her off the ring apron. Inside the ring Valkrye nailed Tawney with a sitdown powerbomb. Back outside Corrie thumbed Rojack in the eye and entered the ring. The ref’s sure 3 count was broken up as Corrie laid in a boot to the back of the head of Valkrye. The ref called for the bell. After the match Valkrye grabbed Corrie by the throat and then scoop slammed her. She was about to nail her with a sitdown powerbomb but Angelo Mosca and Bobby Duncum hit the ring and Valkrye and Rojack took off.

Valkrye defeated T.England by pinfall after a sitdown powerbomb at 3:02

Promo; Cuban Assassin
comes to the ring. He does his usual rips on the United States. Then he turns his attention specifically to Tex Cobb. He says he has watched Uncommon Valor. He calls it a piece of American propaganda. And worse of all he says was the acting of RCW’s own Tex Cobb. He asks who’s next for wrestling in RCW? Mr. T? Chuck Norris? He spits on the ground and then squashes the ground with his heel. The fans boo the Assassin who then starts in on the Canadian crowd. He says why did the Americans have to invade Grenada? He calls then a bunch of power hungry imperialists. This draws a mixture of cheers and jeers from the crowd. The assassin tells the fans to wake up. He yells again WAKE UP, before leaving the ring to a chorus of jeers.

Bout #2:

Squash Match.

Bad News Allen defeated Joe Apollo by pinfall after the enzuigiri at 2:10

In-ring interview;

Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell
is interviewed. First he’s asked about his former AWA tag team partner Greg Gagne’s attempts to win the AWA belts from Jerry Blackwell and Ken Patera. Brunzell says he wishes his friend all the best but that he has moved on from that situation. He says sometimes its just over due to leave the nest, “if you know what I mean”. Brunzell says he’s more concerned trying to take the RCW tag titles from Bobby Duncum and Angelo Mosca. The interview turns towards the situation of Brunzell’s friend and sometimes tag partner Brad Rheinghans. Brunzell says that Brad is okay. He has some swelling around the vertebrae from the irresponsible and vicious attack by Dynamite Kid using that move the brainbuster. Brunzell says he is furious with DK’s actions and has got himself a match with the Brit next week thanks to Marty Goldstein. He dares DK to try and hit him with that move.

Main Event
RCW Heavyweight Title Match

Chris Lyon (champion) (/w Tawney England) v The Destroyer

Both men want to win this match in the worst way. Not only is the title on the line but they are the two finalists for the Hall of Fame committee to consider. The action is back and forth. Destroyer works over an arm of Lyon’s to the point where the champ is executing moves one handed by the end of the match. For his part Lyon work’s over the back of the Destroyer trying to set him up for the Boston crab. The match goes outside where both men get their heads busted open, Lyon’s on the guardrail, Destroyer’s on the outside of the ringpost. The blood drips from an eyehole on Destroyer’s mask, so it’s obvious he is having trouble seeing out of one eye as well. Lyon hits Destroyer with a side slam and then slaps on the Boston crab. Destroyer works his way to the ropes after over a minute in the hold, only to have the champ reapply the hold in the middle of the ring. Again Destroyer spends a minute in the hold before reaching the ropes. Lyon tries to drag the challenger to the middle of the ring again but the cagey veteran holds tight to the bottom rope. The champ keeps trying and the challenger walks his hands up to the middle strand, and then to the top strand, wraps his legs around the head and neck of the champ and takes him over with flying headscissors. Destroyer rolls up the champ and gets a 2 count. Lyon scrambles to his feet, the challenger is slow to his own feet, holding his back. The champ goes for a clothesline, a bad mistake against the master of the crucifix. The champ is caught with the crucifix into a roll, and ref George Gadasky calls the 1, 2, roll-out by Lyon. The champ rolls the challenger, gets a 1 count, before the challenger reverses it rolling up the champ, getting 1 ,2. Lyon reverses it and goes for the pin, 1, grabs a handful of tights, 2, 3 !! The fans boo, Destroyer smacks the mat in anger, and the champ celebrates.

Chris Lyon defeats The Destroyer by pinfall with an inside cradle and a handful of tights at 15:30

Opening Bout:

Neil Sutherland & Rob Flett defeated Brian Jewel & Frank Starr by pinfall at 5:38

Interview;
Tex Cobb
is interviewed by Mike Stone. Cobb is livid about remarks made by the Cuban Assassin last week. The co-star of Uncommon Valour says that if the Assassin wants to criticize his acting ability then that is his right, because it’s a free country. If he wants to criticize his wrestling or boxing ability that’s water off his back. But he draws the line at criticizing his country. He tells the Cuban Assassin its time to put up or shut up. Cobb challenges the Cuban Assassin to a match next week.

Bout #2

Jim Brunzell v Dynamite Kid

Brunzell was seeking revenge for the injury sustained by Brad Rheinghans. So a match-up that could have featured some great scientific action devolved instead into a cheap brawl. Some of the knowledgeable fans in RCW began to boo this match, especially when it spilled out to the floor. Shortly after both men had been counted out Dynamite Kid grabbed a steel chair and ~waffled~ Brunzell, knocking him out and busting him wide open. DK looked like he was setting up Brunzell for the brainbuster on the steel chair but referee Kenny Jay refused to let it happen, blocking the move until more officials could arrive and remove DK.

Double Countout at 5:44

Bout #3

Vic Gate v Bad News Allen

Another setback for the youngster Gate. Although doing a good job of getting in some offense he lost because Allen was too experienced and was willing to bend the rules.

Bad News Allen defeated Vic Gate by pinfall with the enzuigiri at 7:07

Promo;
Matt Brock and Marty Goldstein
come to the ring to announce the results of the Hall of Fame selection committee’s decision on who will be the inaugural inductee into the RCW Hall of Fame. After some kind words about both finalists Chris Lyon and the Destroyer they open an envelope. The first inductee is The Destroyer!!
The fans cheer the announcement.
The Destroyer comes to the ring, shakes hands, and accepts a plaque. He thanks the fans, the committee, etc and says he will see them on March 17th at the formal induction ceremony.

Main Event
#1 Contenders Match for RCW Tag Titles

Ben Bassarab & Phil Lafleur v Kendo Nagasaki & Butch Reed (/w Mr. Ho)

Reed was dominate throughout his time in the ring, overpowering each of his opponents. Nagasaki however had a tougher time dealing with the speed of their opponents and was caught with some double team moves. Just when it looked like Bassarab was going to finish off Nagasaki the Triumvirate (Chris Lyon, Bobby Duncum, and Angelo Mosca) hit the ring.

No-contest at 8:50

Nagasaki headed for the hills. Duncum and Mosca went right after Bassarab and LaFleur throwing them over the top rope after having given each a double clothesline. Lyon wasn’t paying any attention, and suddenly turned around to find himself face to face with Butch Reed. Lyon told Reed to beat it, but Reed pushed the champ down instead. Duncum and Mosca went right after Reed and although he gave some resistance, it soon became 3 on 1, and Reed was given a stuffed piledriver and then tossed from the ring.
Chris Lyon grabbed a microphone from ringside and was joined in the ring now by the England Sisters. The fans boo’d the Triumvirate unmercifully. Lyon said that this is what happens when the Triumvirate is not given their rightful due. He tells the members of the Hall of Fame committee that they have made a big mistake. Lyon reminds the fans that he is the current RCW champion, and that he beat the Destroyer last week. He warns the HoF committee to watch their backs and to sleep with one eye open.

Rojack needed interference from his “valet” Valkrye to defeat the hapless Joe Apollo.

Anton Rojack defeated Joe Apollo by pinfall after a swinging neckbreaker at 5:52

In-ring promo;
Matchmaker Marty Goldstein comes to the ring to set up some matches for tonight. We have the requested match between Tex Cobb and Cuban Assassin which has been building for the last couple of weeks through comments made to one another. Also Goldstein is very pissed off at the tag team champs Angelo Mosca and Bobby Duncum for the interference by the Triumvirate last week in the main event between Ben Bassarab & Phil Lafleur and Kendo Nagasaki & Butch Reed to determine a new #1 contender. As it stands that match was thrown out and no clear #1 contender named. Goldstein says to compensate both teams, they will each get a title shot. He invites Mr. Ho himself to come out to the ring. The manager of the team of Nagasaki & Reed comes to the ring looking wary. Goldstein says he has two identical scraps of paper in a paper bag in front of him, one bearing each team name from the last main event. Whichever team’s name is drawn by Mr. Ho will get the title shot tonight, the other will have to wait and meet the winner. Ho sticks his hand in the bag and draws the team of Bassarab/Lafleur. He is livid and pulls out the other name to check, and sure enough it says Nagasaki/Reed. Goldstein tells Ho to calm down and leave or forfeit his team’s title shot down the line. Ho takes the advice and clears the ring.
Finally, Goldstein says there has been a lot of bad blood building between Jim Brunzell and Dynamite Kid, a feud that the ring was unable to contain last week. Goldstein says he wants an end to this, and it ends tonight, one way or the other, in a STEEL CAGE MATCH. The main event tonight will be Dynamite Kid versus Jim Brunzell in a 16 foot steel cage!!!

Bout #2

Tex Cobb v Cuban Assassin

Cobb started strong, but his punches and kicks garnered him several warnings from the referee Kenny Jay. Unsure of how to proceed without getting DQ’d he became hesitant and conservative which allowed the Cuban Assassin to make a comeback. The Assassin wore down the bigger Cobb but eventually made the mistake of taking it to the floor. Cobb regained control of the wild brawl but got disqualified when he picked up the announce table and used it over the head of the Cuban Assassin.

Cuban Assassin defeated Tex Cobb by disqualification for use of a foreign object at 7:09

Post-Match:

Tex Cobb went around the ring and grabbed the Cuban’s flag. The Cuban Assassin was bleeding profusely from the head from the table shot. Cobb busted the flag pole over the head of the Assassin and started a USA chant which drew mediocre response at best from the Winnipeg crowd. Suddenly Bad News Allen ran onto the scene and nailed Cobb from behind drawing the ire of the crowd. Allen used the broken flag pole to choke Cobb from behind. Cobb was busted open, but was saved after a minute by Vic Gate who came in and cleaned house, battling off both Allen and a recovering Assassin.

Promo; Paramount Pictures proudly presents “Footloose” starring Kevin Bacon in theatres across the nation. This movie premiered last week at the #1 position and features a star studded soundtrack including the title song, Holding Out For a Hero, and Almost Paradise.

Bout #3

RCW Tag Team Title Match

Angelo Mosca & Bobby Duncum (champions) (/w Corrie England)
V
Phil LaFleur & Ben Bassarab

Mosca and Duncum used their size advantage to get early control over this match, as they double teamed LaFleur. He played Ricky Morton for a good five minutes before making the hot tag to Bassarab. The former Stampede protégé went to work with forearms, flying dropkick, flying bulldog, and an impressive German suplex on the much bigger Bobby Duncum. It all came crashing down though when Mosca snuck in the ring and nailed Bassarab with an elbowsmash to the face. Bassarab was bleeding from the nose, and took his turn playing Ricky Morton for a couple minutes before making the hot tag to LaFleur. Like his Canadian tag partner before him LaFleur went to work on both men, clearing the ring. He set up Mosca for his superkick finisher but was interrupted by a Duncum clothesline. Bassarab entered the ring but almost immediately was double teamed by the champs and sent sailing over the top rope. Mosca held LaFleur’s arms behind his back while referee Wyatt Hall tried desperately to make them stop the double teaming. Duncum tried to punch LaFleur, but he moved out of the way and Duncum ~potatoed~ Mosca. Duncum tried to see to Mosca but Mosca gave him a shot back. Duncum went spinning right into a superkick from LaFleur. Mosca tried to break the pin attempt but Bassarab tackled him stopping him from interfering. Hall was lenient and made the count despite all four men being in the ring.

Main Event
CAGE MATCH

Jim Brunzell v Dynamite Kid

High pace action from the start of this match filled with aerial moves. The only purpose the cage had was as a springboard for DK. Brunzell drew an appreciative response though from the crowd when he was first to use the cage to bust his opponent open, by raking the forehead of DK across the cage. Brunzell then went back to his conventional offense of flying dropkicks, earrigngers, high knee lifts, and back body drops. DK’s blood continued to flow freely. Brunzell went for the figure four finisher, but DK kicked Brunzell off just at the right time sending him into the buckle. Jumpin’ Jimmy’s head made contact with both the ringpost and the steel cage resulting in his first wound of the night. With both men bleeding they traded dropkicks, suplexes, and flying crossbody blocks. They stood facing each other in the middle of the ring, fighting through the crimson masks, and traded punches. Brunzell backed DK against the cage wall and tried to nail him with a standing dropkick, but DK swatted him away. The Brit then slingshot Brunzell head first into the cage wall. Dynamite Kid climbed about half way up the cage and then came flying down with a headbutt. Both men were down while ref George Gadasky applied a slow count. Finally Dynamite Kid was on his feet first. He tried to pull Brunzell up by his hair but only came away with bloody fingers. Brunzell nailed DK with a couple shots to the gut, and then tried to fireman carry him. But the former High Flyer’s legs gave out and both men spilled to the mat. DK was the first man up this time and he pulled Brunzell up in the air, and brought him down with the brainbuster. The Winnipeg crowd went nuts, throwing things at the cage wall. DK applied a hasty pin and got the 3 count.

Dynamite Kid defeated Jim Brunzell by pinfall after a brainbuster at 14:29
[approximately 9 minutes shown on television]

Post-Match
DK shouted at the crowd, and security had to keep the fans on their side of the rail. A stretcher was brought in to take Brunzell out of the ring, immobilizing his neck as they had done for Rheinghans earlier in the year.
