So what was going on in the world in March 1983???

Billie Jean by Michael Jackson was the top song throughout the month of March. Other songs doing well that month included, Come on Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Let’s Dance by David Bowie, and She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby.

Tootsie, Gandhi, 48 Hours, and even E.T were still going strong at the box office despite already having been long released. Newer movies released in March included Fracis Ford Coppola’s “The Outsiders” from the book by S.E. Hinton. Spring Break was forgettable but topped the box office in its first week of release. Other forgettable releases included High Road to China, 10 to Midnight, Trenchcoat, Vigilante, Joysticks, and My Tutor.

On the small screen the final days of March saw the release of the TV mini-series “The Thorn Birds” which drew big ratings, a 41 rating and 59 share average.

In sports, March saw the birth of the much anticipated USFL (United States Football League). On March 20th the New Jersey versus Tampa Bay game in Giants Stadium draws the biggest crowd of the season 53,270.

In the news;

March 8th -- President Reagan calls the USSR the "focus of evil in the modern world" in a speech to an evangelical group in Orlando, FL.

March 23rd-- In a nationally televised speech, President Reagan proposes the Strategic Defense Initiative, a space-based defense system. Some scientists doubt the system's feasibility, and political opponents derisively label it "Star Wars."

March 28th Fred Jipp, who married 104 women in 28 countries over 30 years, is sent to a Phoenix prison for 28 years after being convicted of bigamy and fraud.

March 31 -- President Reagan refuses to approve the sale of F-16 fighter planes to Israel until it has withdrawn its troops from Lebanon.

Sony, Phillips, and Polygram launched the compact disc system, calling them unscratchable.

Ron Stong: Tonight marks the beginning of a new era for River City Wrestling. First off we have a brand new time slot and televison station here in the Manitoba and North West Ontario market; CKY TV Channel 5. In-ring Interview:

Ron Strong is with the victorious Adrian Adonis in the ring:

Strong] Excellent first appearance Adrian..

Adonis] Shut up loser. That punk was from right here in Winnipig..

Strong] Winnipeg..

Adonis] Whatever. Nobody in New York City has even heard of this godforsaken city, so I'm not really sure why I'm even bothering here.

Strong] I'm beginning to wonder myself. Surely you've heard of the Winnipeg Jets?

Adonis] What is that some sort of fairy dance troupe? I really don't have time for your cheap plugs of your hometown buddy. I'm here to win some gold...quickly.

The interview is rudely interrupted by none other then former NWA United States Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine who comes down to the ring. Adonis looks pissed off but is not yielding any room. Valentine throws up his hands to try and calm Adonis down. The fans are booing Valentine.

Valentine] Listen Adrian, I know what your saying about being in this wasteland. Quite frankly I'm just here to capture the gold too, the belt being held right now by a nobody named...

Valentine reaches into his pocket and takes out a scrap of paper.

Valentine] Chris Lyon. And that's exactly how I will leave him, lying flat on his back, knocked out.

Adonis] Okay look buddy. I respect you as a man who has held gold before, but this time on the mic, and this time here in RCW belongs to me. Adrian Adonis. Not you. So if you don't mind?

Valentine] Well look here Mr. Adonis. At least you got a match tonight against that guy, I'm scheduled to fight some midget from Alberta J.D. Miller. The guy wants to be a cowboy, but he's only tall enough to ride a hobby horse. So, they're keeping me back...you too I know...to protect that local, paper champ, Lyon. So, I'll tell you what, I'm asking you man, as one champ to another, forgive my intrusion.

Adonis looks skeptical and still a bit pissed off. Finally he throws up his hands and before he leaves says,

Adonis] Fine. This time only. I think I've made my statement here tonight.

Valentine] Now then, I've torn up RCW when I have wrestled here, and now I am signed up for a regular shot. So it should only be a matter of days before I hold the gold belt, unless the promoters hold me back, which they already are. So let this be the first and only warning I'm going to issue. I'm not playing around here kids. If you try to fight me, if you try to get in my way, I will hurt you. It may not be fair and square, but I will hurt you, and you will not get in my way again. Period.

Strong] Well there you have it folks, not one, but two new incredible wrestling stars have joined the rank and file of River City Wrestling. Chris Lyon's tenure as RCW champion may be short indeed.

Backstage Interview:

Mike Stone is backstage interviewing RCW Television champion Bounty Hunter.

Stone] We just saw Buddy Lane beat Kenny Ho and earn a shot at your TV title. Are you concerned in the least about his challenge?

Bounty Hunter] Hell yeah I'm concerned Stone. Lane might beat me for this title, I'm very concerned. I'm also very concerned that I might get struck by lightning on my way home. That has about as much chance of happening as Buddy Lane winning this belt from me. The boy is a punk kid, not old enough to shave. I've been up and down the highways, the original highwayman, kicking butt everywhere I go. Some little girl like Buddy Lane is not going to take away my belt, and neither are these Johnny come lately's like Valentine and Adonis. Does that answer your question Stone?

Bounty Hunter walks away not waiting for Stone to respond, bumping the camera on his way out.

Post-Match:

Greg Valentine re-applies the figure-four leglock on J.D. Miller. He ignores the protests of referee Mort Feinstein, as well as the 5 count being applied. Finally Miller screams and pain and then appers to pass out. Valentine releases the hold, roughly, and menaces the ref just as other RCW officials make it to the ring to try and restore order.

Valentine goes to the announce table, grabs the microphone and stands on the table.

Valentine] CHRIS LYON...I'm calling you out!!

The fans boo Valentine, and wait, but nothing happens.

Valentine] I knew you were yellow Lyon. Well eventually your going to have to show your ugly face around here and when you do...

The fans actually cheer as Mike Valiant makes his way down the entranceway towards the announce table. Valiant steps onto the table and quickly pushes Valentine off drawing a cheer from the crowd. The crowd doesn't necessarily like Mike Valiant, the former triumverate team member of Chris Lyon's, but they enjoyed seeing Valentine land on his backside. Valentine though recovers, and as Valiant is reaching for a mic he pulls him off the table feet first. Valiant takes a nasty fall and Valentine is all over him peppering him with shots to the head. He then locks on the figure-four and it takes several RCW staff members to get him to break the hold.

In the meantime they are removing J.D. Miller by stretcher from the ring, apparently with a broken leg. Valentine points at Miller and then screams at Valiant that he will be next if he gets in the way again.
