River City Wrestling #104
Winnipeg Convention Cente, Winnipeg, MB

We are welcomed by the hosts Ron Strong & Mike Stone.

Opening Bout:

Keith Hart & J.D. Miller, combined weight of 412 pounds

V

Rob Flett & Neil Sutherland, combined weight of 430 pounds

Flett and Sutherland are new to the territory and have the look of young rookies. They are native Canadians, but do not use any of the stereotypical ring attire or gimmicks to associate themselves with their ethnicity. Instead they very much look like a couple of greasy headbangers. Keith Hart had very little trouble staying with the fast pace that Flett and Sutherland set, but Miller fell prey to some double-teaming and proved to be the weak link in the match. The end came when Flett climbed to the top rope, with Sutherland holding Miller’s hands behind his back, and the referee distracted keeping Hart from entering the ring. Flett jumped down with a chop right between the eyes of Miller to knock him out and get the pin.

Rob Flett & Neil Sutherland defeated Keith Hart & J.D. Miller by pinfall when Flett pinned Miller after a top-rope tomahawk chop at 9:40.

Post-Match:

Flett and Sutherland are interviewed and throw out the usual challenge to the current champions. They say they are no cigar store Indians here to amuse the crowd, that they are the real deal and will dress and act however they want.

Promo: "Wrestling Summit" coming to the Winnipeg Arena, August, 1983

Highlights are shown of two of the tremendous wrestlers coming to the Wrestling Summit, set to "For Those About to Rock" by AC/DC.

First off we get the madness of Abdullah the Butcher as he battles the Shiek in Detroit, Pampero Firpo in Puerto Rico, and Hercules Ayala in Montreal, including opening up his own forehead with a fork. We finish the highlights with moments from his infamous Indian Death Match at the Winnipeg Arena in 1982 against Tiger Jeet Singh right here in River City Wrestling.

The next wrestler that we see highlights of are Jerry Blackwell. We see him fighting the Crusher in the AWA, then Ric Flair in St. Louis, and finally we see him delivering an awesome dropkick on Baron von Raschke despite being almost 500 pounds.

Tickets for that great event go on sale Monday morning.

Bout #3

Ray Stevens, 247 pounds, San Fransisco, CA

V

Pat Patterson, 250 pounds, Montreal, PQ

Despite being the fan favorite Stevens attacks his arch-enemy before the bell has even rung, Stevens goes to work with a stomachbreaker, some kneelifts to the gut, and then a front facelock. It’s a coordinated attack aimed at taking away Patterson’s breath, trying to get an early submission. Patterson though counters with a facerake and then goes to work mostly with punches, but also with armdrags, and a firemans carry into a slam. The match spills out of the ring where it turns ugly with Patterson whipping Stevens into the ringpost, then the guardrail and then choking him under the guardrail. Patterson controls most of the match, and holds onto control by distracting the ref and on two occasions delivering a lowblow to Stevens. Patterson also applies, and reapplies the sleeperhold, allowing his forearm to slip down until it is a chokehold. Stevens fights back and gets the sleeperhold onto Patterson but can’t quite finish him. He follows up with a piledriver but still only gets a 2 count. Patterson changes the tone with a thumb to the throat of Stevens, and then applies the sleeperhold again. But Stevens is ready for it, and counters with a jawbreaker. He then delivers a piledriver and climbs to the top turnbuckle for the bombs away. Patterson though decides to grab the ref by the ankle and topple him to the ground right on top of himself, which stops Stevens from jumping. Referee Lynn Powell though calls for the bell.

Ray Stevens defeated Pat Patterson by disqualification for abuse of official at 19:05

[approximately 12 minutes shown on television]

Roster Report:

Ron Strong tells us that Mike Valiant is having some problems with the muscles in his legs and will be resting for a while before returning to the ring.

Buddy Lane likewise is day-to-day trying to rehab after being attacked by Kerry Brown after their match. Lane is hoping to avoid surgery on his knee, but only time will tell.

Speaking of Kerry Brown, rather then pay a fine levied by the promotion for his cowardly attack on Lane, Brown has left the territory in the middle of the night without saying goodbye to anyone or giving proper notice.

In-ring interview:

Judy Martin calls out Jeannie Rahib, and this week the RCW Women’s champion is in the building. Martin challenges her, and then starts into her usual I’m a pro, you’re an amateur spiel. Rahib though is not having any of it and grabs the mic from Martin and tells her to bring that attitude of over confidence with her to the ring next week. Rahib though has her hands on the mic, so Martin deftly grabs the title belt off the shoulder of Rahib and clocks her upside the head. Martin says she’ll bring more then her attitude, she’ll bring the Women’s title as well. With that Judy Martin leaves for the back with the title belt in hand.

Local news promo; following the story of the US Supreme Court declaring many local abortion restrictions unconstitutional, Sally Ride the first US women astronaught in space aboard the space shuttle challenger,  Pope John Paul II meets with Solidarity founder Lech Walesa, and a special report on last week's execution by hanging of 10 women in Shiraz, Iran.

Main Event

RCW Heavyweight Title Match

The Destroyer (champion), 252 pounds, parts unknown

V

Chris Lyon, 236 pounds, Winnipeg, Canada (/w Corrie England)

The two greatest stars in the 4 year history of the promotion hook up one more time for the promotion’s greatest prize.

Lyon makes an awkward lunge at Destroyer who is too agile, and drops down, grabs the wrists of Lyon and monkey flips him head over heels. Destroyer though can’t hold the advantage and this match goes back and forth for a couple minutes until the Destroyer manages to get a bow and arrow submission on Lyon. The challenger though manages to make it to the ropes and returns the favor a minute later by trying to lock in the Boston crab. He has to settle for a half-boston though and that allows Destroyer to reach the ropes after about 20 seconds in the hold. The two continue to battle tooth and nail, and it stays mostly in the middle of the ring which keeps Corrie England out of the equation. However, once it does spill out of the ring the jezebel helps Lyon by attacking Destroyer from behind. This allows Lyon the advantage but can only get a 2 count after a slingshot suplex. Destroyer grabs the advantage again with a bodyslam, vertical suplex, and an armwringer. He then nails Lyon with a pumphandle suplex and goes for the pin. He gets the 1…and suddenly there is someone running into the ring. The newcomer delivers a big boot to the ribs of the champ, causing him to roll over. The big man drops a knee right to the bridge of the Destroyer’s nose, stunning him completely.

It’s Big Bad Bobby Duncum!!

The Destroyer defeats Chris Lyon by disqualification for outside interference by Bobby Duncum at 16:16.

[approximately 10 minutes shown on television]

[The Destroyer retains the RCW Heavyweight Championship]

Post-Match:

Duncum and Lyon high-five and embrace as they are joined first by Corrie England, and then by Tawney England. They pick up the Destroyer and after a big clothesline try to take off his mask.  It looks like they might get it off as the Destroyer is sitting down in the ring, Bobby Duncum has his arms immobilized and Lyon is ripping off the mask, but we are out of time.

That’s it for another edition of River City Wrestling, see you next week.
