The 5th Anniversary Spectacular

December 13, 1984
River City Wrestling #174
Winnipeg Arena, Winnipeg Manitoba

Local rockers “Streetheart” featuring front man Kenny Shields are on hand to perform “Oh Canada” before the matches kick off.

Marty Goldstein welcomes members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football club to tonight’s proceedings. The fans give a rousing ovation as the players Chris Walby, Williard Reeves, Wylie Turner, and Bob Cameron are announced. They are congratulated on their recent victory of the 1984 CFL Grey Cup championship.

Opening Bout:
Canadian Women’s Championship Bout

Natasha (champion) v Corrie England

Referee: Wyatt Hall

Collar-elbow hook up to begin with Natasha backing England to the ropes and breaking clean. They repeat with roles reversed and surprisingly England breaks clean. They try to hook up a 3rd time but England fakes out Natasha and takes her down with a single leg. She drops a knee into the fleshy thigh and then begins to work over the champ’s wheel. This lasts for a couple minutes before Natasha manages to reverse things and get a side headlock on the challenger. England keeps trying to push Natasha off but the champ holds on by putting on the breaks. Corrie though eventually breaks it by taking the champ up and over with a suplex. England clears the cobwebs and then they hook up again. The pace though goes up a few paces as they do some whips to the ropes, play a little criss cross. England tries to drop an elbow onto Natasha who was waiting for the challenger to jump over, but the champ sees it and rolls out of the way. She then keeps Corrie reeling with three successive hip tosses. England bails out of the ring for a break, but when she tries to stand she is too dizzy and falls down, bringing a big cheer from the crowd. The challenger then uses the ring apron to steady herself only to eat some shoe leather as Natasha nails her with a baseball slide. The champ then climbs to the top turnbuckle and is poised for a very high risk flight to the floor below where England is regaining her feet. However, referee Hall starts to hold onto the champ’s leg to prevent her after having counted to 5 and not getting a break. Natasha jumps to the mat only to have her feet pulled out from under her by the challenger who then rams her leg against the ring post. The challenger risks DQ by repeating the move before re-entering the ring. England applies some spinning toe holds to Natasha and then a leg-spreader. Unable to get the champ to submit she tries body scissors but still to no avail. After a couple of punches to the head the challenger grabs the champ’s hair for a hairplane spin, but the champ steps forward and drives both her elbows hard into the chest area of the challenger. She then takes England down with a DDT. Both women are down and struggle to their feet at the count of 8, using each other as support, back to back, Natasha comes to her senses first, hooks the arms of the challenger and rolls her over, gets 1, 2, but England kicks them over to the side. They roll sideways together and the challenger ends up rolling up the champ with her legs spread wide for leverage and gets the 1, 2, 3 !!

Corrie England defeats Natasha by pinfall after a back slide at 9:40
[Corrie England wins the Canadian Women’s Title]

Post-Match:
Bobby Duncum comes down to the ring to celebrate with his valet. Seconds later Chris Lyon is also in the ring to celebrate. Corrie however goes over to the ropes and calls for her sister Tawney to join them. However, there is no sign of the two time former RCW ladies champion, which seems to put a major damper on the celebration.

Bout #2:
Six Man Tag Match

Angelo Mosca, Brad Rheinghans, and Steve Olsonoski
V
Rocky & Bob Della Serra, and Richard Charland

Referee: Buddy Lane

Lots of back and forth in this match, all six men seeing good action and no weak links exploited. Both teams freely seem to enter the ring to break up pin attempts and it becomes apparent that Buddy Lane is near the end of his rope with the behaviour. A six man brawl breaks out and Steve O is on the wrong end of some nice shots by Charland. Steve O is in trouble for a couple mintues until he tags out to Rheinghans. The Olympian works over Rocky Della Serra good and then tags out to Mosca. King Kong tries to finish off Rocky with his bear hug but this brings in all the other men. Rheinghans and Steve O clean house, and then Mosca tags out to Rheinghans. Brad nails Rocky with the Olympic suplex and picks up the victory.

Mosca, Rheinghans, and Olsonoski defeated R. & B. Della Serra, and Charland by pinfall when Rheinghans pinned Rocky after an Olympic suplex at 11:48

Bout #3:
North End Street Fight
No DQ – No Countout – Falls Count Anywhere

Bad News Allen v Chris Lyon

Referee: Kenny Jay

Allen starts the match off by attacking Lyon before the bell. He chops away at Lyon and then throws him out of the ring. Jay tries to hold Allen back but Bad News glares him away. This delay costs him though as Lyon catches him on the apron with a punch to the groin. He then fireman carries Allen off the apron and flapjacks him onto the floor. Lyon then jumps off the ring steps onto Allen with a flying elbowdrop. This only gets a 2 count. So Lyon then tries to come off the apron while holding the ringbell but Allen moves out of the way. He then clotheslines Lyon when he tries to get to his feet. Allen stands over the former champ, waistlocks him, pulls him up, and then drives him face first back down to the ground. He covers but only gets a 1 count. Allen measures Lyon and then hotshots him backward, smashing his face off the ring apron. Allen then pulls a hockey stick from under the ring. When Lyon struggles to his knees his face is a bloody mess, his nose bleeding down his chin. Allen wields the stick around his shoulders like a Judo master and then wields it like a sword, smacking Lyon across the chest. Allen goes for the pin but amazingly Lyon grabs a hold of a broom from under the ring and smashes Allen in the ribs to break the count. Both men take a bit to get to their feet. Allen swings at Lyon with the hockey stick but the Winnipegger ducks and then lunges forward with the broom using a two hand hold to smash the handle into the chest of Allen, knocking him to the ground. Lyon then drives the end of the handle right into the groin of Allen. Lyon walks over to the announce table and spends a few seconds wiping his face, splashing it off with water, and applying pressure to his nose. After this 30 second or so pause, Allen has finally made his way over. Lyon sees him coming and takes the high ground of the announce table. Allen swings the hockey stick but Lyon jumps over it, landing back on the table and then smacks Allen across the face with the broom. He then leaps to the ground and with Allen on his knees Lyon places the broomstick handle across the larynx of Lyon from behind, leaning back to put even more pressure on the throat. Kenny Jay looks extremely concerned about the welfare of Allen and watches carefully as Bad News desperately claws away at the broomstick. Finally Allen manages to back Lyon into the announce table and then flip him forward over his head. Bad News tries to crawl away as he grips at his throat. Once Lyon gets to his feet he runs over and tries to finish off Allen with a side cradle but Allen rolls out at the count of 2. Back on their feet Lyon tries to pick up the broomstick but Allen steps on it, trapping Lyon’s fingers underneath the stick. Allen then takes his other foot and out of the blue ~waffles~ the bent over head of Lyon with his finisher the enzuigiri. The fans are on their feet because this match is over. Allen covers and Jay counts 1, 2, broken up by Bobby Duncum. Kenny Jay tries to intervene but Duncum pushes him hard to the ground. Duncum and Lyon begin to stomp away freely at Allen. Duncum nails him with a bulldog, and then Lyon finishes him off with a German suplex still outside the ring. But there is no referee to count. Perplexed Lyon and Duncum nail Allen once more, this time with a double vertical suplex. Lyon sends Duncum to the back to get another referee when early attempts to revive Jay are not met with success. Duncum runs up the ramp, is lost from site for a second, and then comes back into site, reeling backward. Out follows Hacksaw Butch Reed and he’s right on Duncum nailing him with punches backing him towards the scene of the crime. Reed finally knocks the Texan down with a clothesline just in time to face Lyon. But Lyon is too quick, and nails Reed with a kick to the groin, followed by a DDT. Lyon then nails Reed over the back with the hockey stick, breaking it in two.
Duncum is back on his feet and joins Lyon in stomping away at Reed. Referee Kenny Jay is finally beginning to show signs of life. The Triumvirate members then turn their attention back to Allen and again begin to stomp away like a pack of wild dogs.
Suddenly Marty Goldstein appears from the back, and he’s brought the Posse!! Or rather some large athletes wearing the familiar hometown Blue & Gold. Huge offensive lineman “Bluto” Chris Walby, along with more human sized Williard Reeves and Wylie Turner are on the scene. They go right after Duncum upon instruction by Goldstein and tackle him to the ground. Reeves holds him down in a headlock while Turner holds his legs, and Walby sits on his back. He is effectively neutralized.
Lyon just watches this happen and yells nasty things at Goldstein who openly laughs back at him. One more Bomber has appeared, a rather small Bomber though and he stands right behind Lyon. The former RCW champ turns around and finds himself face to face with Bob Cameron, the CFL’s greatest Punter. Lyon gets that “oh no” look on his face and reaches with his hands to cover the sweet spot…too late. Punt, right between the uprights, and Lyon keels over.
The fans cheer as Goldstein leads Cameron, and the other Bombers (who now carry Duncum) to the back.
Allen and Lyon get to their feet and try and figure out what is happening. Lyon is still bleeding from the nose. Allen helps Kenny Jay to his feet who tells the two men to hook it up. Allen punches Lyon, several times, until he flees for safety inside the ring. He catches Allen on entry with a kick, and then nails him with a rib-buster. He applies a knee to the ribs while holding an armbar but Allen won’t quit. Lyon tries for a suplex but Allen blocks it. Bad News nails Lyon with a shortarm clothesline. Lyon struggles to his feet, and Allen nails him with the enzuigiri for the win.

Bad News Allen defeated Chris Lyon by pinfall in a North End Streetfight after hitting an enzuigiri at 12:31

Post-Match: Bad News Allen helps Butch Reed to his feet and the two men begin to walk to the back supporting each other. They are met half way up the ramp by the Blue Bomber members who applaud them before helping them limp their way to the backstage area. The fans are appreciative of the efforts of all those men and cheer them loudly.

[first intermission]

Pre-Match:
The camera pans ringside where we get a wave from the patriarch of the Hart family, Stu Hart along with one more of his sons Bruce.

Bout #4
RCW Tag Team Title Match

Keith & Bret Hart (champions)
V
Abdullah the Butcher & King Tonga (/w Miss Hartel)

Referee: George Gadasky

This match really consisted of a prologue and two chapters. The prologue saw King Tonga start the match off and go right to work on Keith Hart, who insisted on starting the match over his younger brother. Tonga controlled Keith, backed him into the corner and tagged in Abby to begin chapter one. Abdullah came in and controlled Keith, but allowed him to tag out to Bret. The youngster tried to take Abby off his feet but couldn’t budge the Sudanese madman. Abby pounded Bret down and then slammed him. He dropped a big elbow and almost got the 3 count. He worked a slow, methodical attack against each Hart brother, seemingly more interested in hurting them then winning the match. He also refused to tag out to Tonga. The Hart Brothers just couldn’t muster enough offensive against Abby, and soon both were wearing the crimson mask. Finally having had enough at the urgings of his father Keith entered the ring and helped his brother Bret double team Abby. Tonga did not budge to try and help his partner, and the Hart Brothers started to make some progress while Gadasky applied a very slow count. The Harts nailed Abby with a bodyslam (it took both of them), and then a double elbowdrop. They then whipped Abby to the ropes and then rocked him with a double dropkick. Abby staggered back to the ropes where Tonga made the blind tag off his back to begin chapter two. Entering the ring Tonga nailed Keith with a savate kick that dropped him. Hartel managed to corral Abby to the ring apron, and in fact Abby left all together. He paused long enough to attack Stu and Bruce, but when security intervened he just left to the backstage area despite the pleas of Hartel. Meanwhile inside the ring Tonga nailed Bret with a bodyslam, facerake, and then a hanging vertical suplex. Keith was still trying to come to his senses. Tonga set up Bret and locked on the Tongan death grip. Bret lasted only a few seconds before crying uncle.

King Tonga & Abdullah the Butcher defeated the Hart Brothers by pinfall when Tonga made Bret submit to the Tongan death grip at 8:43
[King Tonga & Abdullah the Butcher won the RCW Tag Team Titles]

Bout #5
Crusher v Billy Robinson

Referee: Wyatt Hall

As loud as the crowd got for their hometown heroes in the North End Streetfight, it was eclipsed by the standing ovation given to da Crusher. To add a little “Anniversary Spectacular” touch to the event, Crusher was preceded to the ring by 4 accordian players all performing “Roll Out the Barrels”. The man who made Milwaukee famous was so touched by the ovation he got that he let his guard down. That allowed Robinson to sneak attack him from behind and drive him to the buckle. Robinson then grabbed one of the accordions and smashed it into the Crusher’s gut. Referee Hall finally called for the bell.
As could be expected Robinson controlled the early minutes of the match with an atomic drop, belly to belly suplex, and a couple attempts at a submission with an abdominal stretch. Robinson even took the match outside and punished Crusher with some closed fists.
Finally Crusher got things turned around after Robinson telegraphed a back body drop and Crusher wound up the Bolo punch..and then poked the Brit in the eye with his fingers. Crusher went to work with fists, kicks, and a bearhug. Robinson reached the ropes but the Crusher refused to yield and the men spilled out of the ring to the floor. Crusher whipped Robinson into the ring steps, with the Brit toppling over them. Crusher then grabbed Robinson’s leg and banged it repeatedly off the ringsteps. Crusher rolled back inside to beat the 10 count while he awaited Robinson’s return. Billy got close to the ropes but when Crusher tried to grab him the ref broke the count and ordered Crusher to a neutral corner. Hall started the count again from 1 while the Crusher stewed in the corner, and Robinson complained to Hall.
Dynamite Kid suddenly appeared from the back with a ceramic beer stein and ~waffled~ Crusher in the back of the head from behind. Dkid then hoisted da Crusher in the air and brought him down with the brainbuster. Robinson entered the ring, and by the time Hall turned and couldn’t figure out what happened to Crusher, Dynamite Kid was hiding under the ring apron. Robinson picked up the Crusher and nailed him with a double underhook suplex for the unpopular win.

Billy Robinson defeated Crusher by pinfall after a double underhook suplex at 7:27

Bout #6
RCW Television Title

Butch Reed (champion) v Ben Bassarab

Referee: Buddy Lane

Bassarab did not like the jeers he was receiving from the crowd and twice left the ring to argue with them instead of locking up. Finally Reed went out to get him but Bassarab ducked back into the ring and then caught Reed with a boot as he entered. The Canadian went to work with kicks, punches, a double axhandle chop, and a bulldog from the 2nd turnbuckle, but failed to get the pinfall. He then tried to match Reed with punches and power which was a mistake as Reed began to fire back. Bassarab tried to leave the ring but Reed grabbed him by the trunks and hauled him back inside. The champ went to work with a pair of elbowsmashes and a bodyslam. He only got a 1 count on the pin. He worked a reverse chin lock, and then a front chancery. Bassarab though bounced him off the ropes and took him down with a drop toe hold. He then applied a front chancery of his own until Reed lifted him in the air and broke the hold with an atomic drop. The two then collided as Bassarab bounced off the ropes. The Canadian rolled to the floor while the champ recovered inside the ring. Reed left the ring after getting up to take the fight to Bassarab. They exchanged punches and kicks around the ring before Bassarab ducked a clothesline attempt and then nailed Reed with a back heel kick.
Bassarab rolled back inside to break the count and then outside nailed Reed with a snap suplex. He rolled him back inside and went to the top rope. The challenger nailed a splash from the top rope, made the pin and only got a 2 count.
The challenger continued the assault with a legdrop from the second rope, and a DDT but still only gets a 2 count. Bassarab sets Reed up in the corner, climbs to the top turnbuckle, puts Reed in a front facelock and then jumps off, snapping Reed to the ground. It’s a vicious move and the crowd jeers as Bassarab gets 1, 2, foot on the bottom rope to make the break! The challenger is incensed and complains about a slow count. Bassarab whips Reed to the ropes and tries to nail his crossbody block finisher. However, the champ catches Bassarab and then slams him down to the mat. Lane counts 1 but Reed isn’t interested in the pin at this point as he abandons it to straddle the challenger and begin to pepper him with punches to the head. Lane quickly puts an end to that but Reed has the advantage now. Reed nails a couple punches to the stomach of Bassarab before nailing a gutbuster. He then causually steps on the stomach of the challenger while pushing down on the top rope and trying to distract the ref by having a casual conversation with him. But Lane will not be distracted and Reed is forced to break the hold. Reed tosses Bassarab into the corner, climbs to the 2nd rope and begins to pepper him with punches to the noggin as the fans count to 10. Reed then gives Bassarab a belly-to-belly, but hotshotting his head off the turnbuckle. The champ tries to end the match by setting Bassarab up for a superplex, only to have the challenger give him an undetected lowblow and then push him off the top to the mat below. Bassarab can’t take advantage however right away as he is too winded.
The two finally hook up again in the middle of the ring exchanging punches, toe to toe, which Reed wins easily. Bassarab again leaves the ring and Reed chases him. The Canadian tries to roll back inside but Reed grabs him from behind and nails him with a belly to back suplex. Back inside Reed works him over with another gutbuster and a series of stomps. The champ then makes Bassarab scream in agony by applying the stump puller, but the challenger refuses to quit. Reed goes for a piledriver but Bassarab manages to backdrop Reed. Bassarab buys time to recover more by applying an inside toehold until Reed reaches the ropes. Bassarab nails Reed with a knee sending him between the ropes, bouncing off the apron to the floor below. As Reed stands up Bassarab climbs to the top turnbuckle and flies through the air and nails Reed with a cross body block, nailing him to the ground. Even Bassarab takes a couple of seconds to recover from that one and has to re-enter the ring to break the count. He then leaves the ring again to retrieve Reed. He whips him to the ropes and goes for a dropkick but hits nothing but air when Reed hangs onto the ropes. The champ thrashes out at Bassarab with a running clothesline but Bassarab moves out of the way. He catches Reed on the way back with a drop toe hold. He slingshots the champ face first into the turnbuckle and then as the champ is falling he comes off the opposite ropes with a head of steam and nails Reed in the head with a flying kneesmash right to the head. He covers and gets 1, 2, 3 !!!

Ben Bassarab defeated Butch Reed by pinfall after a flying kneesmash at 18:02
[Ben Bassarab won the RCW Television Title]

All three title belts defended so far tonight have traded hands with Corrie England defeating Natasha for the Canadian Women’s Title, King Tonga & Abdullah the Butcher defeating the Hart Brothers for the RCW Tag Titles, and now Ben Bassarab defeating Butch Reed for the Television title. There is one belt left to be defended tonight and that’s the big one, the RCW Heavyweight championship.

Bout #7

Former World Champions Collide – the Re-Match

Bob Backlund v Harley Race

Referee: Kenny Jay

Collar elbow hook-up to start and Race sneaks in an elbow to the jaw of Backlund, and follows up with a knee to the gut. Standing side headlock, and then hiptoss to the ground. Race begins to wear down Backlund as if he is expecting this to be a long drawn out match of attrition. After about 4 minutes Backlund finally counters a Race attempt at an armbar with a hammerlock. He takes Race down and rides the hold. Race is upset and takes a wild swing at Backlund on the break but misses, which allows the former WWWF champ to take Race over with a belly-to-belly. Backlund works a series of armbreakers, followed by an armwringer and then a clothesline to the mat. The fans applaud the series.
Race though turns things around with a thumb to the throat and then a bodyslam and an elbowdrop for a 2 count. Race’s turn to work Backlund on the mat for a couple mintues working on an arm. Then on a corner break both men start throwing lefts and rights and we have ourselves a real donnybrook. Race throws Backlund out of the ring. We are 10 minutes into the match.
Backlund tries to enter the ring twice with Race blocking him both times with a knee, knocking Backlund back to the floor. The third time Backlund catches Race and drags him outside the ring. The two exchange punches and kicks and Backlund rolls Race back into the ring. A Russian leg sweep gets Backlund a 2 count, and when he tries for the crossface chickenwing the former NWA champ is able to grab the bottom strand for the break. Race nails Backlund with a mule kick and then a neckbreaker. He sets him up and nails him with a piledriver! For the first time the fans think this could be it, but Backlund kicks out after a 2 count. Race picks up the intensity with a series of stomps, and then decimates the younger man with a corkscrew suplex. He again goes for the pin but this time Backlund gets his foot over the bottom rope for the break.
Race drags Backlund to the middle of the ring and makes several attempts to lock on a figure four leglock, but Backlund’s survival instincts allow him to kick Race off on the first two attempts, and then legsweep him to the ground on the third.
The next few minutes see the combatants trade the advantage back and forth.
The first big break occurs when Backlund takes Race down with a drop toehold and Race’s head misses the turnbuckle in the corner and instead smacks straight off the ringpost. Backlund drags Race to the middle of the ring and nails him with the Atomic Drop, his finisher. However, Race’s own survival instincts kick in, and the cagey veteran allows his momentum to carry him between the ropes and he lands hard on the floor below. We are 20 minutes into the match at this point.
Upon the insistence of Kenny Jay, Bob Backlund remains in the ring which allows Race to the count of 9 to recover. Race tries to scoop Backlund up into a fireman’s carry but Backlund pounds away at his back, dropping him to the ground. Bob works a front facelock and then turns it into a swinging neckbreaker. He covers but only gets a 1 count on his double tough opponent.
Backlund then wows the crowd who always underestimate his conditioning and strength by sticking his head between Race’s legs, lifting him on his shoulders and then taking him back with a shoulder mounted suplex. He makes the pin and gets 1, 2, Kickout, at the last moment. Backlund then rests as he applies a standing leg split submission on Race. But the NWA champ’s legs are also strong and after about 20 seconds he begins to make some progress in closing his legs. Backlund senses this and leaps forward, catching Race with an elbowdrop to the sternum. He then locks on the crossface chickenwing, but is too close to the ropes and Race gets the ropebreak. Race reaches forward, grabbing Backlund by the trunks and hurls him through the ropes to the ground below. In the process though Backlund’s knee smacked Race in the face. The former NWA champ is knocked out, lying across the bottom rope, while the former WWWF champ is knocked out on the ground below. Jay applies the count and Backlund is on his feet at the count of 6. He walks over and drops an elbow to Race whose head is sticking out of the ring. He enters the ring to break the count, then leaves again to drop another elbow. But this time Race rolls his head out of the way and Backlund crushes his elbow on the ring apron. Race pulls Backlund into the ring by his ears!! He then grabs him into a full nelson. He holds that hold for over a minute, shaking Backlund around, swinging him at one point, and finally slamming him to the ground. He drives his knee repeatedly into Backlund’s back and then applies a bow and arrow submission. Backlund though manages to roll through it and get a rope break. We are 27 minutes into the match now.
Race tries for a camel clutch but again Backlund reaches the lower rope. Race loses his temper and starts to stomp away at the lower back of Backlund while in the ropes. Jay counts to 4, then starts again, and when he gets to 4 he decides to physically interfere. But Race moves Jay instead of obeying him. Jay sticks a finger in Race’s face and warns him he’ll be DQ’d if he does that again. Backlund uses the break though to rest and then catches Race by surprise with a standing dropkick. He follows up with a back bodydrop, and then goes for the figure-four but Race kicks him off. Backlund bounces off the ropes and catches Race with a flying cross body block, and gets a 2 count. Scrambling to their feet Backlund locks on the waistlock but Race counters with a go-behind, and then Backlund counters with a hiptoss. He tries to drop his knees onto Race’s head but the Missourian moves out of the way. He then reaches up his feet as he lies on the mat, grabs Backlund’s head in a scissors and wrenches him to the ground. Race works the head scissors until Backlund pops out of it. Race sends Backlund to the buckle, goes for a clothesline but Backlund ducks under and nails Race with his Atomic Drop finisher. This time Race bounces off the ropes and Backlund catches him for a German suplex. But Race momentarily blocks the suplex and swings his arms wildly, and accidentally (?) nails referee Kenny Jay. Backlund follows through with the German but there is no one to count the subsequent pinfall as the fans chant, 1, 2, 3. Backlund goes over to revive Jay, and within seconds is clobbered from behind by Race. The fans jeer as Race leaves the ring and returns with a chair. Backlund struggles to his feet and Race ~waffles~ him with the chair. He drags Backlund to the middle of the ring and applies the figure-four. He has him beat but when Kenny Jay calls for the bell its not because Backlund is quitting, its because he apparently saw the chair shot as he recovered.

Bob Backlund defeated Harley Race by disqualification for using a foreign object at 32:43

[second intermission]

Crusher and Jim Brunzell come down to the ring, presumably for the main event but they are not announced and its unusual for the champion to come out first.

Crusher] Rat, a-tat-tat, what a pair of British rats. You bunch of limey bums, you think you can cheat the Crusher, well I’ve got news for you goons. Da Crusher is always the last man standing. The only one who can knock me down for the night is Katie bar the door, and a good keg of Milwaukee’s finest. Make that 2 kegs you bums. You ain’t going to get away with what you dones to me earlier. I’ve had a nice chat, and used some Crusher talking to Marty Goldstein, and before we haves us the main event tonight we are going to have us a wee rematch. Da Crusher one more time against Billy “the big British rat jerk” Robinson. And Jimmy here is going to be at ringside to make sure you Kid don’t interfere. Goldstein says that if you don’t come out here Robinson and face me, rat to man, then the match tonight with Dynamite Kid taking on Jimmy will become a non-title handicap match, me and Jimmy against the Kid. So, roll out the barrels, we’ve got the blues on the run..and the British rat jerks on the run too.

After a few seconds a sheepish looking Billy Robinson is escorted down to the ring by Dynamite Kid. Brunzell starts to walk to the Kid, so DK stops half way up the ramp and walks away to the back. Robinson is in his street clothes, white pants and a red and blue striped golf shirt. Referee Buddy Lane comes running down the aisle to officiate.

Bout #8:

Impromptu Re-Match

The Crusher (/w Jim Brunzell) v Billy Robinson

Referee: Buddy Lane

This was just a complete brawl, and Buddy Lane let everything go. Crusher battered Robinson for a couple minutes to the delight of the fans. Robinson fired back though and used some actual scientific moves like a Salto suplex to raise the class of the match. He then backed Crusher against the ropes and tried to choke the life out of him, with Crusher turning a nice shade of purple. Da Crusher though was quite eager to fight that kind of game, sweeping his arms underneath to break the chokehold of Robinson and then nailing him with a headbutt. The Crusher went to work with punches and kicks, pulling Robinson’s shirt over his head like a Hockey jersey so he couldn’t see and his arms were tied up, and then laid in some heavy haymakers to the head. Robinson dropped to the ground, and Crusher ripped off the shirt and then tore it apart at the seams. He then dropped a knee to Robinson’s back and then undid and removed Robinson’s belt. Standing with one foot on his opponent’s back Crusher used the belt to whip Robinson across the back with several lashes before Buddy Lane insisted on taking the belt away and tossed it to the floor below. As Da Crusher argued with Lane, Robinson staggered to his feet and measured Crusher from behind. But then his pants slipped down his hips and Robinson and to hold them up. Crusher walked over and elbowed Robinson between the eyes, and then wound up and nailed him with the Bolo Punch.

It’s been three hours of action and thrills since the start of the national anthem at 7:00pm, and we still have the big main event to be resolved.

RCW Heavyweight Championship

Jim Brunzell (champion) v Dynamite Kid

Referee: George Gadasky

Test of strength to start and DK gets in a kick to the gut of the champ. He walks him over and rams his head off the top turnbuckle. Kid takes Brunzell down to the mat and works an armbar. Brunzell gets to the ropes but instead of breaking clean Kid rams the champ’s head off the mat. Front facelock by Dynamite, followed by a hiptoss, and a dropkick between the shoulder blades. Quick cover only yields a 1 count.
Dynamite tries to scoop Brunzell up but the champ drops behind, and takes him down with a waistlock takedown. Kid tries to escape only to set himself up for a belly-to-back suplex. Brunzell took it to a criss cross off the ropes and rocked the challenger with a flying forearm. The champ tried for a vertical suplex but Kid blocked it with his foot, and then took Brunzell over with a snap suplex. A couple elbow drops and then Dynamite dropped a headbutt on Brunzell, but could still get only a 2 count.
Next Kid went to work on the champ’s injured ribs from earlier this month, driving his palm into the rib cage, twisting an armbar and then driving his knee into the ribs. A rib breaker was followed up by another armbar also putting weight on the ribs. Brunzell stood straight up and dragged Kid to the ropes for the break.
Brunzell chopped Dkid who fired back with a punch, and a kick to the gut. Brunzell was mad now and he backed the challenger into the corner and started to lay in lefts and rights despite the outcry from Gadasky. Brunzell mounted the 2nd turnbuckle and reigned down more punches. Brunzell went to work on the shoulder of the challenger with a shoulderbreaker, a series of knifehand chops to the shoulder, and an armbar with the foot digging into the shoulder. Brunzell then dropped Kid with a short arm shoulder tackle, driving his own shoulder into the challenger’s. With Dkid on his knees Brunzell did a step over on the arm and then sat down, driving the arm into the mat. The champ then put the Kid into an armbar which he finally broke on his own after about 30 seconds of not getting the submission.
Brunzell drove his elbow into Kid’s shoulder several times and then took him down with a front suplex. He made the cover but only got a 2 count. We are about 8 minutes into the match.
The champ continues to wear down Kid with a standing surfboard and then applies several armwringers, continuing to work over the shoulder. He wraps the arm over the top rope and back under, pulling on the arm to try and pop the shoulder. He then slides DK over along the ropes, the strand still between the challenger’s arm and body and rams him hard into the turnbuckle shoulder first. Brunzell climbs to the 2nd turnbuckle and bulldogs DK to the mat. He covers but only gets a 2 count.
Brunzell whips DK to the ropes but the Brit is too fast and catches the champ flat footed with a spear. Both men are down but DK is up first at the count of 8. Kid nails the champ with several kicks to the gut, followed by a snap suplex for a 1 count. He hiptosses the champ into the corner, places him on the edge of the mat, slides out of the ring, and then begins to work over the ribcage with shots to the ribs. From his standing position outside the ring he nails Brunzell in the ribs with several headbutts before finally climbing back into the ring to break the referee’s count.
DK nails a bodyslam and then an elbowdrop from the second turnbuckle. He covers for a 1 count. He goes for the cover again, but instead of a lateral press he has other ideas. With Brunzell on his back DK uses his arms to apply a wristlock on the champ while using his leg to pull up on the neck of the champ, in a classic belly to belly wristlock and neck submission. He works this move for over a minute. If he lets up on the legs it puts Brunzell in a pinning position, but when the champ pulls up to avoid the count then DK just reapplies the hold. Finally DK gives up on the hold and releases it.
Another round of vicious attacks by the challenger with kicks, stomps, punches, chops, and then a piledriver. Gadasky counts, 1, 2, foot over the bottom rope. DK attacks the knee of the champ as it lays across the bottom of the rope. He then turns his attention again to the ribcage by applying an armbar all the while driving his head into the ribcage of the champ. Finally Brunzell escapes with a kip up and we are at the 15 minute mark of the match.
Dynamite Kid throws the champ out of the ring and follows him. He grabs a chair but when threatened with DQ by Gadasky he puts it down. Brunzell charges at the challenger and takes him down to the floor with a double leg takedown. He mounts him and starts to lay in punches. DK rolls through it and is now on top returning the favour. Gadasky tries to separate them but they continue to roll around and pound on each other. Finally they stumble to their feet and Brunzell takes DK back down with a clothesline. He rolls him back in but is caught returning to the ring by a kick to the gut. DK then devastates the champ with an underhook facebreaker. He goes for the pin but again only gets a 2 count.
DK whips Brunzell to the ropes and then nails him with a flying dropkick. He tosses Brunzell into the corner and catches him on the rebound with a back body drop. He picks up the champ, throws him back into the corner. This time the champ doesn’t bounce out though and DK charges in with a flying bodypress. Brunzell though anticipates the move and rolls through it, sending DK flying over the top turnbuckle and crashing to the ground below. Brunzell stumbles to a neutral corner, and Gadasky counts the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, DK just manages to roll back inside.
Brunzell pulls him to the middle of the ring and applies the Indian Death Lock. After about 20 seconds DK finally manages to break the hold by powering sideways. He makes a desperate lunge and catches the champ with a side cradle, he gets 1, 2, the champ rolls through it into a back mounted cradle and gets the 1, 2, 3!!!

Post-Match:
The Crusher comes out to the ring with a small keg of beer and a couple of cigars. He’s followed by a trio of accordion players, and as Gadasky straps the belt around the champ’s waist da Crusher lights Cigars for everyone. “Roll out the Barrels” plays to an appreciative audience, as they salute their champion.

That’s it for another year of River City Wrestling.

See ya in 1985 !!
